Personal Statement

Growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe, as a child I was often alone with nature. After graduating, I spent a year in Jerusalem, studying Islamic mysticism with a Sufi shaykh. The two major influences in my work are our relationship with nature, and the spiritual journey of self knowledge that we undertake in this life.

In my earlier work I chose to explore the idea of containment by implying the presence of a subtle self which is contained within the physical body. Several works are meant to suggest the discarded shell of the physical body, which has tenderly enclosed the enduring aspect of the human spirit. One of my main concerns is with the frailty of material existence, particularly the fleeting span of a human lifetime.

Recent work entitled "Die before you die," is made of found objects and recycled materials. It is about the stripping away of layers of personality in order to undergo a process of transformation.

It has been said of my work that it explores "the elegant flip flop from the category of material to the category of the body."
